Pulling the tank

New Savage wannabe-cosmetic-mechanic here! Thanks for the advice various of you gave on the clicking buzz from the speedometer area. Just want to add my confirmation that pulling the tank is a beech. I did NOT want to get into taking off the petcock, so I put up with the jockeying around the frame....and added a few scratches to the small collection already there. I dismantled the speedo, put the rubber insulation on the bolts, tape on the other points, reassembled and found that it doesn't seem to sit as snuggly on the tank as it did before disassembly. I took it down again and tried to make it tighter, with only little success. There is now a gap here and there around the rubber seal that fits between the speedo and the tank. Nothing dramatic, but I wonder if it will allow water in and if that will be bad. Methinks so! Silicone caulk called for? I hope not! It can be messy. Anyway, I'm now initiated into THIS phase of Savage repair and feel that I learned a lot in the process (like, be sure to reattach the vacuum tube before reassembling. That cost me an extra bit of practice in disassembly.) Just thought I'd share my pain, for those who might have nothing better to do than to read the Savage Soap Operas...that I find terribly entertaining myelf! Saluti! RJT
